This is our favorite circuit to start with. Northern France concentrates some of the country's best-atmosphere stadiums within a 100 km radius. Plan for 2 nights there.
🏟️ Friday evening — Bollaert-Delelis, Lens
Start with the best. RC Lens' stadium is universally considered to have the best atmosphere in France. The "Sang et Or" (Blood and Gold) fans chant from the first to the last whistle. The Marek stand, the ultras' corner, the low rumble that rises before kick-off... Bollaert isn't explained, it's experienced.
Practical info: Stadium is a 5-minute walk from Lens city center. Tickets between 15€ and 40€ depending on seating. Restaurants and bars in the center are open late.
🏟️ Saturday afternoon — Pierre-Mauroy, Lille
A 30-minute drive from Lens. The Pierre-Mauroy Stadium in Villeneuve-d'Ascq is one of France's most modern stadiums. Inaugurated in 2012 with its unique retractable roof in France, it offers exceptional comfort and acoustics. LOSC plays there in a warm atmosphere, especially during Northern derbies.
Practical info: Direct metro access from Lille (line 1, 4 Cantons stop). Tickets between 20€ and 60€. Arrive 1 hour early to enjoy the esplanade.
🏟️ Sunday — Stade du Hainaut, Valenciennes
35 minutes from Lille. Less publicized but full of charm, the Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes-Maubeuge is a pleasant surprise. Built in 2011, it offers a modern setting and an authentic popular atmosphere. An often underestimated stadium but well worth a visit.
Practical info: Check if VAF (Valenciennes FC) is playing at home this weekend. Very affordable tickets (10€-25€). Ideal for finishing the road trip gently.

🏟️ Saturday or Sunday — Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Étienne
Only 60 km from Lyon. "The Cauldron" (Le Chaudron) of ASSE is one of France's most legendary stadiums. Its bowl-like configuration—the stands nearly drop onto the pitch—creates acoustics that live up to its nickname. The Green Angels, the north stand, the chants that resonate... Geoffroy-Guichard is old-school football at its finest.
Practical info: Accessible by tram from Saint-Étienne city center. Tickets between 15€ and 45€. Particularly electric atmosphere during derbies against Lyon.
🏟️ Sunday — Stade des Alpes, Grenoble
45 min from Saint-Étienne. The Stade des Alpes (20,068 seats) is the home of Grenoble Foot 38. Built in 2008, it offers a unique mountain setting—on a clear day, you can see the Belledonne mountain range from the stands. An incomparable visual experience.
Practical info: Tram B from Grenoble city center. Very affordable tickets. Ideal for concluding the road trip with an exceptional panorama.
